If you’ve been following along with this series, you know we’re diving deep into how better writing can skyrocket your sales. If you missed the previous parts, check them out.
Now let’s talk about something that will destroy your sales faster than a bad headline or pitch - BEING BORING.
And what’s the easiest way to make copy boring? Waffling.
You might not know what that means now, but once you learn how to spot it, you’ll see it everywhere.
How To Recognize & Kill Your Waffling
Here’s a few sentences:
“The meeting will be held at five, and what will be discussed is ‘the sorry state of business writing.’”
“I’m reaching out to you because we've been in the process of developing a new marketing system geared towards the generation of leads for home service businesses.”
“I know you’re probably busy, and I don’t want to take too much of your time since your schedule is probably packed.”
Do you see what’s wrong?
They’re all full of WAFFLING. Unnecessary words, weak language and not being clear. Think of it like trying to cut a tree with a broken spoon. It ain’t gonna work.
We need something sharp like a chainsaw.
Cutting Through Clutter
Let’s fix these sentences that I just showed you.
Before: “The meeting will be held at five, and what will be discussed is ‘the sorry state of business writing.”
After: “The meeting’s at five. Subject: ‘The sorry state of business writing.”
Before: “I’m reaching out to you because we've been in the process of developing a new marketing system geared towards the generation of leads for home service businesses.”
After: “Reaching out because we generate leads for home service businesses. Interested?”
Before: “I know you’re probably busy, and I don’t want to take too much of your time since your schedule is probably packed.”
After: “ … (That’s it. Stop wasting words!)”
You don’t need to apologize for someone’s schedule, just get to the point.
The Death Of Waffling
It’s time to stop hiding behind passive language. Forget being timid. Get bold with your words. Write like you’re storming a fortress, not tiptoeing around a puddle.
Cut the clutter. Eliminate the fluff. Your audience will notice the difference—and your sales will reflect it.
Take charge with your writing, and watch your results skyrocket.
